Visual Merchandising Dos and Don’ts for Beauty Clinics and Salons

Visual Merchandising Dos and Don’ts for Beauty Clinics and Salons

Visual merchandising is the art of arranging products, displays and signage in a way that helps them sell themselves. In a salon or clinic environment, this includes everything from windows and shelves to tester stations, educational signage and gift-with-purchase zones. Whether you stock makeup, professional skincare or skin supplements, thoughtful merchandising makes a difference. Here are our top tips to help you get it right.

Merchandising "Dos"

  • Start with a goal. Know your objective. Do you need to move limited stock, introduce a new category, provide samples, or educate?
  • Create seasonal displays. Use the seasons as your theme or starting point when developing a display.
  • Connect with the senses. Design displays that activate sight, sound, smell, touch or even taste – think textured fabrics, subtle fragrance, or lighting.
  • Use viewpoint movement. Incorporate space, story, time, emotion, movement and shape to guide how customers interact with your displays.
  • Make it self-selectable. People love to feel in control – make it easy for them to browse, test or pick up products.
  • Keep it simple. The clearer and more accessible the display, the more likely it leads to a sale.
  • Display pricing. Don’t make people ask. Include price lists or clearly marked tags on or near the product.
  • Use in-store signage. Place high-impact marketing pieces in treatment rooms, waiting areas or windows where they’ll be seen.

Merchandising "Don’ts"

  • Don’t overcrowd. Busy, cluttered displays overwhelm and turn people off.
  • Don’t overstock shelves. Avoid displaying too much inventory – it hides hero products and adds visual noise.
  • Don’t forget lighting. Keep focus lights on displays, even after hours, to catch the eye of passers-by.
  • Don’t block pathways. Leave room for clients to move comfortably around displays and testers.
  • Don’t assume product knowledge. Make information clear and accessible so clients feel confident in their choices.
  • Don’t go off-brand. Use brand-provided materials or follow guidelines closely for a polished, consistent look.
  • Don’t overcomplicate messaging. Simple words work best – think ‘Free’, ‘Save’, ‘Glow’, or ‘New’.
